Chepstow Mari Lwyd Wassail

Last weekend tagged along to the Chepstow Mari Lwyd Wassail with the Nottingham Owd Oss…

The Mari Lwyd Wassail is held every year in the village of Chepstow in Wales. It combines the custom of wassailing with the Welsh mari lwyd tradition.

The Nottingham Owd Oss is called Dobbin, and you can see him above (the bright red horse skull…). If you’re familiar with the concept of mumming then you can probably already see similarities between the Owd Oss and a mummers’ play. If you’re not, then you may well think that it looks very strange and daft… And you’d be quite right.

Alongside the wassailing, mari lwyd and owd oss performances, there was a fair bit of morris dancing and a lot of ale drinking! It was great fun and I can’t wait to go again next year!
